Episode 17 of Club Management is here and I give updates from isolation in NYC as the Coronavirus continues to wreak havoc around the world. Luckily, I’m no stranger to adversity and having to adapt to change.
Rapper, Haysen Cheng from Hong Kong also knows what it’s like to bounce back from adversity. I chat with the aspiring rapper on his epic comeback story.
Haysen is quickly gaining popularity in the Hong Kong hip- hop scene with nods from local legends like Doughboy and TXMIYAMA. His Durags & Chopsticks project is a testament to his skill and even features a track with Chengdu based rapper J.Mag called “Weight Lift.” Filled with quick hi-hats and a bouncy trap beat, Cheng raps about holding the proverbial torch to hip-hop fame and the support of homies and fans for holding him down.
As things have come together quite quickly for Cheng, times weren’t always so easy. Two years ago, the twenty-year-old had to make a tough decision on whether he would go to the states to fulfill his dream of playing college basketball or stay to help his mother and family with financial struggles. A thought so eloquently painted in his “Dartmouth, Pt. 1” freestyle where he reflects on past hurdles and remains faithful for future prosperity.
Haysen shares his journey of having to sacrifice and how his music has proven he was right on track the entire time. Our interview begins at 4:03.
